Off the Mat, Into the Dance, Onto the Stage! Dive deep into the creative cauldron with us this weekend, and allow your Best Self to emerge….
Day 1: THEME: The Roots Revisited: Establishing Foundation, With an Upcycled Twist. (6-9pm)
6-7pm: Fluid Core Yoga for Bellydancers: Introduction to Deb’s new Fluid Core Yoga for bellydancers, to open the body, awaken the core, align the spine, center the mind. A comprehensive daily practice designed to prepare the body specifically for belly dance. May also include: core conditioning, and bellyroll-asana, and an experiential anatomy introduction to fascial planes. *This material is the foundation of Deb’s unique core-centric approach to Tribal Fusion, and how she builds dance movements from the inside out.
7-9pm: Revamping Traditions with Innovative Flair: This workshop will introduce you Deb’s current inquiry of how do we build intelligent fusion that honors the roots? Material includes traveling, variations on the 3/4 shimmies, turns, tempo changes, and dynamic transitions. The movement vocabulary and music is inspired by “old school“ traditions ( ATS and vintage belly dance-both of the cabaret and tribal lineages), brought to you with a new fusion twist. Drilling/technique focus will be on what Deb considers to be some key technique fundamentals of Tribal Fusion, necessary for any advanced dancer: Finding and articulating the fluid core, differentiating obliques, low belly, & glutes, and refining your shimmies. Focus on distinguishing your 3/4 traveling shimmy variations: arabic, overshimmy, twisting shimmy. And zills. After technique refinement and drills to root our foundation, we will move on to making dances, and how to honor the roots, yet upcycle the stylizations to create fresh new traveling combos that glide effortlessly across the floor, showcase layers, shimmies, and the balance between sweeping, earthy movements, and stylized, sharp torso isolations representative of the vintage era, focusing on seamless transitions between them all. Bring Zills!** This workshop is brought to you in the spirit of why we love bellydance. * This workshop is great for both ATS and tribal fusion dancers.
Day 2: THEME: The Ultimate Slink Factor: Deb’s signature approach to Slow, Slinky, and the Serpentine.
Morning Session: 10a-1pm: Unlocking the body Dance Therapeutics Upper Body (2hrs) In this workshop, we will focus on upper spine, ribs, shoulders, neck, and side body, and learn how to unlock even the most “stuck” places, like the thoracic spine, for ultimate movement expression in bellydance, and proper Tribal posture and frame that saves the shoulder joints. Drawing from Yoga Therapy, Traditional Thai-Yoga Massage, Anusara Yoga, Viniyoga practices, Somatic education, and Deb’s personal stash, we will focus on creating more space and flexibility in the upper body, spine, and shoulders to directly support your belly dancing posture, arms, isolations, flexibility, and articulation of movement in order to create slinkier, more controlled slow movements and maximum expression through the arms, hands, and fingertips. All of this will be directly applied to belly dance technique and stylization. *This workshop serves as the warm up for the afternoon session. Daily drills/conditioning/zills (1 hr) Daily Focus: Shoulder Blades, Arms, Upper Body isolations, Core, and creating fluid movement pathways. Deb’s explicit breakdown of her signature artwork and shoulder blade action to give the ultimate ooey gooey tribal control.
Afternoon Session: 2-5pm: Creating More Decadent Dancing. Circles, Spirals, Pathways; Finishing Touches; Deepening movement quality: plus Elegant Arms. (4hrs)
After learning how to properly unlock and activate the body to prime it for elite level training, In this module, we will now deep dive into Deb’s repertoire of slow, slinky tribal and learn how to cultivate the ultimate slink factor, refine and deepen your movement quality, and cultivate the technique and artistry necessary for an elite dancer. Exploring the core, learn how to access deeper places in your torso from which to instigate movements, smooth transitions, fluidity, presence. We will play with adding elements of suspension, pause, and subtlies to your dancing to create ultimate drama, and the intoxicating look and feel of slow/slinky tribal. We will also play stylized torso isolations, with emphasis on “the tension of opposites” and interplay between smooth transitions/serpentine slink and sharp/controlled locks, exploring the advanced elements of contrast and creating tension within a single movement phrase, to give your choreographies texture and let your own individual voice and musicality shine through. Deb has been coined ‘the queen of slink”. Come learn her ultimate slink factor secrets of how to access the deepest musculature of the body to create jaw-dropping, refined, mesmerizing movement quality, presence, and form. Combos, and manipulation of combos to bring out one’s own individual voice are included. This module also includes material from workshops on: Elegant Arms: Intense focus on arms, shapes, and articulating from the head to the fingertips, helping to embody the most expressive, intentional dancing and posturing possible, and accent your body movements. We will also explore the choice of movement or stillness in the ARMS as ways to consciously express emotionality, intention, and character in your dancing.
Day 3: And Now We’re Dancin!
Morning Session: 10a-12p: Dance Therapeutics/ Self-Care for Dancers, with Special Guest Demian McKinley, LMT, RYT World premier module, and extra Special treat from structural integration specialist, anatomy teacher, yogi, and performer, Demian McKinley, born from collaborative somatic inquiry of Demian and Deb, about how to unlock the body and maximize potential for flow states and performance optimization. Workshop includes concepts of dancer anatomy, fascia planes, and dynamic tensegrity, and well as practice self-care practices/bodyrolling to focus on traditionally ‘stuck’ places in the bellydancer’s body: IT band, hips, back, legs, and psoas. *A necessary part of the serious dancer’s toolkit.
Afternoon session: 1:00p -5:15p: From the Mat, to the Dance, to the Stage, Embodying the Elite Dancer Within. 1-3pm: Daily drills/conditioning/zills/combos (2hrs) : Today’s focus will be on layering & glitch. How to train smarter and more efficiently, now to build complex layers from the ground up, how to create new combos and pathways to drill to, in order to push your edges and keep your training fresh and inspired. *Highlights Deb’s rubix cube method of teaching layering, and breaking down and building it back up. Electronic music will probably be happening. Focus will be on cultivating clean, crisp layers, over graceful, fluid, traveling footwork patterns and torso isolations/bellyrolls, while also beginning to layer elements such as character, emotion, relaxed facial expression, intentional drishti (eye gaze), mood, in order to train in the studio like we want to project on the stage.
3-3;15p: break 3:15-5:15p: Artistry in Motion: Cultivating Performance Quality & Dynamic Dancing (2hrs) Dance is the visual representation of the music. Our bodies are the vessel of creative expression and art in motion. In this workshop, we will move beyond the belly dance box to explore ourselves as artists, creating shapes, story, and captivating stage presence and performances from beginning to end. This workshop will pull from Deb’s studies in dance, music, somatic inquiry, theater, and yoga to push our edges, encourage artistic development, and draw out one's own personal style, intention, and innovation--to be applied to either solo or group pieces. We will explore concepts such as "throwing energy,” "the tension of opposites", drishti, and pause, character development, theater games, as well as practices to become more comfortable in our own skin, and being seen/interacting with an audience. We will learn and practice the delicate art of critique/giving feedback, as a necessary tool for any serious dancer’s self-growth and performance refinement. Exercises in this workshop will help build performance confidence, cultivate your own voice, and can be applied to improv, choreographies, solos, or groups. Please bring journal, water bottle, and playful spirit, to explore your edges and creative voice in a safe, supportive group environment. We will leave 15min. at end for an appropriate cool down, and closing.
